Trends and Issues in IDT

According to Monica W. Tracey and Gary R. Morrison in Trends and Issues in Various Settings: Instructional Design in Business and Industry, there has been a steady growth of employee training in most organizations--business, Health Care Education and in the military. It is necessary to produce more than instruction, but also analyze performance, identify root causes and identify appropriate solutions. In these various settings, the processes to training is dependent upon the needs, funding and how the organizations operate as a whole. Keeping in mind that each is still Instructional Design, but each organization uses it differently so that it becomes effective for their needs. Evaluation of Learning

The evaluation process is important to make decisions about effective learning from the objectives intended to be mastered as well as improvements in instruction. The evaluation process is intended to determine the merit, worth, and value of things and evaluations are the products of that process according to R. Burke Johnson and Walter Dick in Chapter 10 of Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology. Formative assessments are designed to support decisions about student successes on the objectives they were taught and be able to demonstrate the skills involved. Summative evaluations are used to make decisions in lesson planning and curriculum instruction to increase student success. According to Johnson and Dick, CIPP model or Context, Input, Process, and Product, are distinct types of evaluations that can be done alone or in a single comprehensive evaluation. Theories & Models Of Learning & Instruction

According to the article Education Theory/Epistemology and Learning Theories, Epistemology investigates the origin, nature, methods and limits of human knowledge. This branch of philosophy seems to focus on a broader range of learning and not just the how of learning defined by Driscoll, 2005 as mentioned in Chapter 4 of Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology. It also isn't the individuality of learning as Lemke, 1997 believes in that same chapter. Behavior Learning Theorists believe that knowledge is gained by reaction and thought processes that go along with previous actions which is only a small part of the Epistemology Philosophy. It seems that if you are tempted to being an Epistemologist (new word?), then you must look deeper into learning as opposed to choosing one aspect of a theory and developing a method of determining how learning takes place.
